History of the Lviv Coffee Factory “Galka”

The Lviv Coffee Factory began its operations in December 1932 as the “Lviv Cooperative Factory of Coffee Substitutes ‘Sospilny Promysl’.” Founded by Ukrainian private employees with the support of the “Supruha” society, the factory was located at 30 Bohdanivka Street, in the premises of a local “Prosvita” branch. Soon, its first products appeared on store shelves: chicory “Luna”, coffee substitute “Prazhyn”, and malt coffee “Luna”. The products were known for their quality, taste, and affordable price, quickly winning the favor of consumers. In January 1934, the newspaper “Noviy Svit” wrote: “Every Ukrainian citizen watches with interest and joy the development of our industry and trade.” A year after its founding, the factory was already using raw materials from local farmers and preparing to build its own drying facility. The cooperative factory actively studied market demand, conducted surveys, and ran advertising campaigns. Historical calendars of “Chervona Kalyna” frequently featured appeals to support national production, promoting the famous products: chicory “Luna”, coffee substitute “Prazhyn”, and malt coffee “Luna”.

Post-war period and development

After the war, the factory continued its development thanks to its traditions and expertise. In 1971, it installed equipment from “Niro Atomizer” for the production of instant coffee, combining decades of experience with the latest coffee processing technologies. Since then, products from the Lviv Coffee Factory have become recognized internationally.

Modern history

After Ukraine gained independence, the factory was transformed into JSC “Galka” in 1993. In 1994, the joint venture “Galka Ltd.” was established in partnership with the British company E.D.&F. Man Coffee Limited, one of the largest coffee producers in Europe.

Today, the Ukrainian-English joint venture “Galka Ltd.” is a modern production facility committed to natural and eco-friendly principles. By combining tradition with the latest technologies, “Galka” products are known for their high quality and enjoy strong consumer demand.
